UVA and UVB Rays…What are they and what do they do??

UVA rays account for 95 percent of the UV radiation that hits Earth’s surface. This particular ray is the dominant ray, although it is less intense than UVB rays, it is responsible for penetrating your skin (top layer) more deeply. UVB rays have a shorter wave length and are typically responsible for producing your sun tan; both are, actually. UVA rays tend to tan your epidermis (outer layer of skin), whereas UVB stimulate the melanocyte cell, (located in the bottom layer of the skin) to produce the brown pigment, melanin, thus giving you a suntan. This means that UVB rays are the ones also responsible for your sunburn. Tanning beds emit both UVA and UVB rays, but this is much a safer way to tan than exposure outdoors. This is because light emitted from tanning equipment contains approximately 40 percent less UVB rays than does light from the sun. Tanning in a controlled, indoor environment allows you to find the “perfect balance” of both rays by limiting the amount of time your skin is exposed to these sun rays. Just the right amount produces Vitamin D, helps clear up acne, boosts your mood, and even treats some skin disorders.

Contrary to what the Skin Cancer Foundation amongst other critics may tell you, the reality is that base tans from within professional tanning facilities have actually PROVEN to help prevent sunburn. Base tans have been the key to success for indoor tanning salons for more than two decades. Sunscreen plus a base tan have protected millions of people from sunburns, especially during those tropical and sunny vacations. Literally, millions of indoor tanners would validate the truth in this.
What you may not know is that base tans actually multiply the ability of sunscreen to do its job. As we all know, protecting your skin cells from burning and overexposure is the goal. It is important to reach your max amount of Vitamin D intake on a regular basis, but in the winter this is especially imperative because our levels tend to be naturally lower. Sunshine is the only natural source our bodies need to produce Vitamin D. Many of us aren’t getting enough vitamin D because it is hard to attain from milk or supplements alone. Scientists and studies have shown that tanning 15 minutes a day, a few times a week can help you feel better and reach your ideal amount of vitamin D intake. New research has lead scientists and dermatologists to believe that Vitamin D is important for preventing-and even treating certain types of cancer. Ultraviolet rays are the most efficient way to absorb this particular vitamin. Salmon and other fish where vitamin D are naturally present aren’t responsible for much of this vitamin circulating throughout your blood. Supplements may not be too effective in raising your vitamin D levels, either. Most multivitamins contain Vitamin A, which is actually tends to offset many of Vitamin D’s benefits. During the short winter days, the sun rays don’t reach and absorb in our skin as they should, thus resulting in lack of vitamin D. Controlled, indoor tanning will not only boost your mood this winter season, but will benefit you by producing more Vitamin D-in turn lowering your risk of certain cancers.
